Mommy Nailed It or So I Thought
God conversation with my 8 year old
My son, who is 8 years old, was sick this week and he had to miss the first day of camp. He was excited about going swimming! I told him that he couldn’t go because he was sick and needed to go to the doctor. On the way to the doctor he asked me “why did God make me sick”? I responded, “God didn’t make you sick because he wanted you to miss your field trip.” God has a reason and purpose for everything that happens to us. God did not promise us that we would have a life without sickness, pain, or heartache”. My son being the inquisitive individual that he is asked ,”what did He say?” God said in Deuteronomy 31:6 (NLT) “So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the LORD your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.”
Proud Mommy moment I thought I nailed it (wait for it).
He asked, “What does that have to do with me being sick and my field trip?” I laughed, because I thought I had already answered the question. It means that God will always be with you and his plan is not to harm you. It states in Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. He said, I think I got it now! “God made me sick because…well Mommy I still don’t understand.” I summed it up by saying we may not like or understand everything that happens to us in life. The one thing that we CAN count on is that God will always be with US and His plan is NEVER to harm us. He looked to the side and said “God, I am glad you didn’t have plans today because we are going to the doctor (lol).”
I started thinking that this concept is not only difficult for children to understand, but adults as well. For me, there has been several times in my life that I didn’t understand why a situation was happening to me. I may start to question God to see if I can get an immediate explanation and/or response. There are times when the response is not as instant as I would like. I have to constantly remind myself of Romans 8:28 (NIV) “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” This verse offers me peace in any situation. Not all situations happen TO me, they happen FOR me! The situations offered me an opportunity to grow closer to God and/or learn more about myself as I transition through life.
I understand that some of you reading this may have been or going through a horrific situation in your life. It may be hard to believe that God is with you during these times. God will never leave or forsake you! Reach out to Him and pray for guidance. You may not hear Him at first, but don’t stop praying. According to Psalm 46:10 (Holman Christian Standard Bible) “Stop your fighting–and know that I am God, exalted among the nations, exalted on the earth.”
